FILM: THEEB // 2016

I've been keeping up with 'Theeb' news, the praise, the nomination, the screenings etc but managed to stay away from spoilers or knowing anything about the plot.

In the Middle East, the word 'Bedouin' is mostly used as a slang to belittle someone's 'simple' actions or personality, this film makes sure we understand Bedouins real way of living, brotherhood and loyalty.

More than anything, 'Theeb' is a film that restored my faith in MENA's cinema.

FILM: THE LUNCHBOX // 2013

Can’t get over how human this film is. When I read the summary, I was worried the plot would feel a tad forced, but it all felt so natural. The awkwardness, giddiness and how personal reading a handwritten letter/note feels. We see both of them grow as human beings, with every note tucked under rotti or retrieved from an empty lunchbox.

Top all of these nice feelings, with beautiful cinematography.

FILM : OHAYÔ // 1959

Two brothers go on a silence strike to make their parents buy them a TV. Featuring an appearance of the most adorable child I’ve ever seen. That’s all you need to know.

FILM: لما شفتك — WHEN I SAW YOU // 2012

The beauty of ‘Lamma Shoftak’ is in the tiniest details. The smiles, glances, hand gestures & facial expressions. It’s far away from all the action that some of the fighters are in, and more close to their personalities. Their hobbies, what they eat, how they interact with each other etc. It was absolutely beautiful and personal in all the right ways. ِ

FILM: ME AND EARL AND THE DYING GIRL // 2015

I still don’t know how I feel about this, but all I can think about is ‘who do I contact to get my hands on their recreated foreign/indie/cult films collection.’

I definitely thought this was going to be something along the lines of ‘The Fault in Our Stars’, and it sorta was, but not really? I enjoyed it more than I thought I would, and liked how the plot moved relatively quicker than most plots.

FILM: EXTRAORDINARY TALES // 2015

Excellent collection of short animations based on stories by Edgar Alan Poe.

FILM: A LITTLE DEATH // 2014

Amusingly, after watching this, the poster actually made sense. I didn’t really know anything about this and I’m glad I didn’t. This film is about unusual fetishes & sex fantasies, but at the same time, it’s about opening up to that significant other about it.

They’re all displayed as different mini-stories but the one I screen captured below is my personal favorite. It’s about a man who is deaf & mute, but wants to experience phone sex. Don’t want to give too much away, but it was a good film.
